This Sunday’s clash between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia promises to be a scorcher, both on and off the pitch. This isn’t just any match; it’s the Mashemeji Derby, one of Africa’s fiercest rivalries, and the oldest in Kenyan football history.

Nicknamed Ingwe and K’Ogalo respectively, these Nairobi giants have been locked in a heated battle for supremacy since their first encounter in 1968, which Gor Mahia edged out 1-0 at the Nairobi City Stadium.

While both boast a rich history, their recent fortunes have diverged. Gor Mahia holds the record for most Kenyan Premier League titles (20), while AFC Leopards have claimed 12. However, the tide seems to be turning. Gor Mahia dominate the recent head-to-head, boasting a 31-28 lead with 34 draws. But last season, the Leopards roared back, claiming a crucial victory – their first in seven years – in the return leg. This season, Ingwe fans were frustrated to witness their team lose to the K’Ogalo faithful in a resounding 2-0 loss in the first encounter.

The Mashemeji Derby is more than just goals and glory. It’s a cultural phenomenon, a battle for bragging rights among ethnic groups and a test of fan loyalty. The passion, however, can sometimes boil over. In 2012, a red card sparked riots after Gor Mahia’s Ali Abondo was sent to the showers, leading to a stadium ban for the club.

Despite the fiery atmosphere, the rivalry has also produced some legendary names. Sammy ‘Jogoo’ Onyango and Dan Sserunkuma of Gor Mahia top the scorer’s list with six goals each, while Wilberforce Mulamba of AFC Leopards sits at four.

This Sunday’s showdown will be not be played at the usual Kasarani Stadium due undergoing renovations but the historic Nyayo National Stadium. The initial choice, Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, raised safety concerns amongst Gor Mahia fans.
