Last season, Geoffrey Onyango was in flying colors at Kariobangi Sharks and was one of their key players, making a remarkable milestone by reaching 100 premier league games since graduating from their academy to the senior team. The left back popularly known as ‘Super Leftie’ managed 10 assists and 5 goals last season helping him to seal a move to Kenya Police FC at the end of the season.
However, since the start of the current season, Onyango’s presence has been scarce, with only one official appearance for the uniformed men. His sole appearance was a second half substitute in their victory in Confederations Cup return leg against Ethiopian Coffee in Ethiopia. It is worth noting that in the first leg of the fixture at Nyayo Stadium, Onyango was notably removed from the matchday squad just minutes before kickoff, a decision that raised eyebrows.
Given Onyango’s potential and his recent call up to the Harambee Stars U23 squad for the COSAFA tournament in South Africa, many expected a smooth transition into the Police team as well as continued involvement in the national team set up. Yet, he has somehow faded into the background, leading to questions about his situation. Is Onyango injured or he just can’t make the match day squad at Police? How poor has he became in just a span of a few months that he can’t make the squad yet he is one of the few leftbacks that can go upfront and create magic?
The last time Onyango was seen in action was during a friendly against league giants Gor Mahia, prior to their Confederations Cup clash with Zamalek. During this match, he was forced off after the second half restart with what appeared to be a knee injury, potentially a meniscus tear, an injury that typically requires 2 to 3 months for recovery. If the injury was the cause of his absence, one might expect him to be back on the pitch by now, making an impact for his club.
As a fan of the game and a supporter of talented players like Onyango, it is only natural to ask; Where is Geoffrey Onyango? If his absence is indeed due to injury, how is his recovery progressing? Could there be other factors at play? It is just hard to believe that a player of his quality can’t make the squad for both Salim Babu and Etienne Ndayiragije teams. Could it be a transfer gone wrong? Where is the Super Leftie we all admired?
