Kenya finds itself in hot water once again with world governing body Fifa threatening a fresh ban over accusations of third-party interference. This comes after a Mombasa High Court ruling halted the Kenyan Football Federation’s (FKF) Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for March 16, 2024.

The AGM, a crucial event for the Kenyan footballing body, was expected to address key issues, including the upcoming FKF elections in October. Fifa, in a letter addressed to FKF Secretary-General Barry Otieno, directed the federation to conduct the AGM promptly and continue preparations for the elections.

This development follows a similar situation in February 2022, when Fifa suspended Kenya from all football activities. The previous suspension stemmed from the then-Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed’s decision to disband the FKF leadership led by president Nick Mwendwa on corruption allegations. Fifa considers such government intervention a violation of their statutes, which emphasize member federations’ autonomy.

The suspension was only lifted in November 2022 after the new Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, reinstated the disbanded FKF officials. Kenya narrowly avoided missing out on co-hosting rights for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania due to the prior suspension.

Fifa’s renewed threat of a ban carries significant consequences for Kenyan football. National teams at all levels, including the Harambee Stars and Harambee Starlets, would be barred from participating in international competitions. Kenyan clubs wouldn’t be able to compete in continental tournaments like the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. Additionally, the ban would severely impact player development and grassroots football initiatives.

The reasons behind the High Court’s decision to halt the FKF AGM remain unclear. However, resolving the current situation requires open communication and collaboration between the Kenyan government, the FKF, and Fifa.

Fifa, in their letter, urged the FKF to “exhaust all internal remedies” before seeking legal recourse. This suggests Fifa might be open to discussions aimed at finding a solution that adheres to their regulations and addresses any concerns raised by the court ruling.

Kenyan football stakeholders must prioritize the interests of the sport and its players. Finding a swift and amicable resolution that respects Fifa’s principles and addresses any legitimate legal concerns is paramount. The consequences of another suspension would be a major setback for Kenyan football, jeopardizing years of progress and the dreams of aspiring Kenyan footballers.
