French publication L’Equipe reports that Zinedine Zidane is now the favorite to take over as Bayern Munich’s next head coach, replacing Thomas Tuchel. This contradicts recent denials from German outlets Sky Sports and Bild.
According to L’Equipe, Zidane is one of only two candidates remaining on Bayern’s shortlist, with Ralf Rangnick being the other. This aligns with a previous report from Mundo Deportivo suggesting Zidane was close to securing the Bayern job.
The report highlights several factors that make Bayern an attractive option for Zidane. The club’s strong organization, minimal managerial interference, and potential for immediate success with a well-established squad all fit Zidane’s preferences. Additionally, the French manager is eager to return to coaching after a three-year hiatus from Real Madrid.
However, there are still hurdles to overcome. Zidane reportedly hasn’t finalized specific details with Bayern, and adapting to the German language and Bavarian lifestyle could be challenges. More importantly, L’Equipe states that Zidane is also keeping a close eye on developments at Manchester United, potentially leaving the door open for a move to Old Trafford.
Bayern has advantages in its pursuit of Zidane. The club has good connections with his inner circle, including his former agent who has ties to influential figures within Bayern. Additionally, their shared sponsor Adidas could be another factor in attracting Zidane.
Despite Zidane’s apparent lead, the report suggests that Rangnick might be the more realistic option for Bayern at this point. Negotiations to bring back Julian Nagelsmann fell through after he recently extended his contract with the German national team. This has forced Bayern to reconsider their strategy. While Rangnick was previously considered, his role might now be as a temporary manager until Xabi Alonso, currently at Leverkusen, becomes available. However, Rangnick’s acceptance of this plan remains uncertain.
Adding to the uncertainty, Bayern has yet to officially confirm any in-depth discussions with either coach. The club’s management might wait until the conclusion of the European season before announcing their new head coach.
