AFCON 2025: Tanzania progresses, Uganda eliminated

East Africa representatives in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Tanzania and Uganda had contrasting outcome in their Tuesday night duels.

Tanzania held Tunisia to a 1-1 draw to keep their hopes in the tournament alive to make it to the last 16 of the competition where they will be up against hosts Morocco.

The Carthage Eagles efforts were rewarded in the 42nd minute when Ismael Gharbi converted from the spot after the Video Assitant Referee (VAR) had judged Bakari Mwamnyeto to have fouled Hazem Mastouri in the box.

After the restart, Tunisia opted to protect their advantage rather than push on. That cautious approach gradually invited Tanzania back into the game and they equalized in the 54th minute through Feisal Salum curled effort.

The 1–1 draw officially secured Tunisia’s qualification to the Round of 16 on second place in the group, while Tanzania progressed as one of the best four third placed ranked teams.

In a contrasting outing, Uganda bowed out of the tournament after going 1-3 down to Nigeria. A brace from Raphael Onyedika and a strike from Paul Onuachu ensured Nigeria maintained a 100 percent record after the group stage and send the East African side home.

While Uganda were reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when substitute goalkeeper Salim Jamal Magoola used his hands about 9 metres (10 yards) outside his area to stop a Victor Osimhen shot, they got a consolation with 15 minutes left from Rogers Mato.
