Arsenal clawed their way back to the Premier League summit with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, forcing the title race to a dramatic conclusion on the final day.

The Gunners, despite a lackluster performance against a depleted United side, secured the crucial three points that put them one point ahead of Manchester City, albeit having played an extra game.

Leandro Trossard’s 20th-minute strike proved to be the difference maker. Capitalizing on sluggish defending by veteran Casemiro, Kai Havertz snuck in behind the United backline, delivering a perfect cross for the Belgian to slot home at the near post.

United, despite showing fight, lacked the quality to seriously challenge Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Their defeat further diminishes their hopes of European qualification next season.

Arsenal now shift their focus to North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who have the chance to do them a massive favor by grabbing a result when they host Manchester City on Tuesday. The Gunners wrap up their season next Sunday at home to Everton, while City welcome West Ham.

United’s Struggles Laid Bare

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, witnessed firsthand the Red Devils’ woes, opting to watch their struggle at Old Trafford instead of celebrating their Women’s FA Cup win at Wembley.

United’s threadbare squad, already lacking depth, was further hampered by the absence of key players, including captain Bruno Fernandes. New manager Erik ten Hag, drenched by a late thunderstorm, will rightfully point to the lack of resources at his disposal. However, their inability to trouble Raya exposed the stark reality of United’s current predicament.

Young players like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho injected energy into the midfield and flanks, respectively, but young striker Rasmus Hojlund found little joy against the solid Arsenal defensive duo of William Saliba and Gabriel.

United’s need for a complete overhaul is undeniable. While Ten Hag deserves time to implement his vision, questions linger over his suitability for the new era under Ratcliffe.

Arsenal Weather the Storm, Hope for a Spurs Miracle

Arsenal fans, despite their unconvincing performance, braved the literal and figurative storms that rolled into Manchester towards the final whistle, their elation at securing a crucial victory undimmed.

The Gunners recognize that Manchester City still controls their destiny. Two wins for the Citizens against Spurs and West Ham would secure a fourth consecutive title. However, Mikel Arteta’s men have navigated two potentially tricky fixtures – the North London derby and a historically difficult trip to Old Trafford – with crucial victories.

Despite the lack of their usual attacking fluency, the only thing that matters at this stage is securing points. Trossard once again emerged as the hero, his near-post finish proving decisive.

Arsenal now pin their hopes on Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou fulfilling his promise of upsetting City. The Gunners have a chance to claim their first title in 20 years on the final day of the season, a prospect that would have seemed far-fetched back in August.
